Brides Night Out Show

On March 14th, I participated in the wedding show Brides Night Out which took place at the beautiful hotel Place d’Armes in the Old Montreal. For this show, I decided to use this year’s color: purple. I played with various shades of purple while adding touches of white and gold. This is how my stand turned out.

The pictures were taken by the talented Caroline Lessard.

Jessica & François: a vintage chic wedding

It was such a pleasure to do the flowers for the wedding of my cousin Jessica! She and François were organizing a wedding with a vintage chic theme. One of my favorite looks!

Photo 1491

At our first meeting, Jessica already had a good idea of what she wanted. Bouquets and centerpieces without too much structure made with delicate and romantic looking flowers. We decided together to go for a color palette of whites and pinks. The bouquets were made of roses, dahlias, anemones, lisianthus, queen ann lace, etc. White and pink for the bride and the maid of honor and all white for the bridesmaids.

The centerpieces were made of hydrangeas, roses, dahlia, lisianthus, chrysanthemums, queen ann lace, wax flowers and snow berries. To add a little more visual interest, Jessica chose a mixture of tall and short silver vases.

Thanks you Jessica and François for trusting me with the flowers for your big day!

Céline & Éric: a medieval wedding

When we met, Céline and Éric already had a good idea of what they wanted for their wedding day. A medieval theme! The ceremony took place in an orchard and the reception in a little restaurant with a slightly medieval decor. Céline and Éric had even created a special coat of arm for their big day which included oak leaves and thistle.

We chose to make the floral arrangements with flowers that were a bit more rustic, so that they looked like they had just been hand-picked from a field. Chrysanthemus, craspedia, eryngium, eucalyptus and of course oak leaves were used.

It was a fun working with them. Congratulations again!

Brides Night Out

Last Friday, I participated in the bridal event Brides Night Out Montreal. There were about 25 exhibitors, all extremely talented! I was able to meet fantastic vendors and to chat up with a number of brides-to-be.

Here are a few pictures of my booth and of the bouquets and floral arrangements I prepared for the event.

Marie & Martin: rustic elegance at the restaurant Fourquet Fourchette

Marie and Martin already had a good idea of their vision for their wedding day when we first me. They wanted a rustic, but elegant, look that would complement the wood tones of the restaurant Fourquet Fourchette in Chambly. The colors for their theme were white and coral.

On the tables, we placed mason jars filled with baby’s breath and another flower, either a rose, a gerbera or a ranunculus. For the bride’s bouquet, we went for multiple shades of coral. Her bouquet included a mix of Amsterdam roses, Evelien gerberas, pink alstromeria, and orange ranunculus. The maid of honor had a bouquet all in white which included Akita roses, white freesias, white alstromeria, and white gerberas.

Marie and Martin are a laid-back, easy-going, couple and were a pleasure to work with. Despite the grey sky and the rain that fell most of the day, they were able to create a wedding that represented them. And as they say: rain on your wedding day brings you luck!

Congratulations Marie & Martin!

Spotlight on: orchids

Orchids have always been a popular flower for weddings. Their delicate shapes and brilliant colors bring a touch of elegance and exoticism to any floral arrangement. Here are some of the most widely used ones.

Cymbidium orchids

This is probably the most widely used of all of the orchids. Cymbidiums are available all year round from growers in New Zealand, Holland and South Africa. They come in regular size, around 3-4” wide and 6 to 8 blooms per stem, or mini size, about 2” wide and 10-12 blooms per stem. The colors available are white, pinks, reds, yellows, orange, browns, and greens. Cymbidium orchids have the longest vase life of all of the commercially available orchids.

Dendrobium orchids

Dendrobium orchids are another very popular type of orchids that offer a long vase life. They are available all year and the majority of them come from Thailand, although, there are some growers in Singapore, Hawaii and Costa Rica. Dendrobiums usually have 4 to 8 blooms per stem and each bloom is about 1-2” wide. They are available in white, pinks, reds, oranges, green and purple. The blue dendrobiums are tinted.

Your Florist And You

Having a good relationship with your florist, with lots of trust, is very important. When you consider that you usually do not get to see the final product until the big day, having confidence in the person’s abilities is crucial. Below are a few tips to help create a better client-florist relationship.

The first thing you should do is establish a budget for your flowers. How much money are you able to spend on this element of your wedding? When you meet potential florists, let them know your budget so that they can make suggestions based on this amount. An experienced floral designer will work with your budget to create arrangements that will match your style or theme without breaking the bank.

Do some research before you meet your florist. Flip through wedding magazines, search floral websites and wedding blogs to get an idea of what you like. Try to establish your style. Do you prefer classic bouquets, exotic ones, or perhaps modern ones? Think of your color palette as well. Of course, your florist can guide you through the selection process. But you will have a more efficient consultation if you have a general idea of what you like. Your florist can then make suggestions based on your preliminary research.

If you are meeting more than one florist and want to compare prices, make sure that you are comparing the exact same bouquet. You should consider the number of blooms, foliage to be used, accessories, etc. A bridal bouquet may have 20 blooms for one florist while another one only uses 16. Be careful not to choose your florist based on price alone. Of course, your budget should be followed, but it is important that you […]

Spotlight on: ranunculus

Such lovely little flowers! The ranunculus are beautiful, delicate blooms that come in various shades of white, pink, yellow and red.

They are available year-round but the largest harvest comes from California in the spring. Ranunculus start off as tight little buds but will open up and continue to grow in your vases. They will last about 7 days.

Ranunculus can be used on their own or mixed with other blooms to create the most romantic bouquets.

Earth Day 2013

Today is Earth Day. It takes place every April 22 and is the largest environmental event celebrated worldwide. The goal of this day is to promote awareness and to encourage people to reduce their impact on the environment. In my opinion, every day should be Earth Day!

You might ask: what does this have to do with flowers? Well, there are ways you can reduce the environmental impact of your next event. Choosing seasonal and/or locally grown flowers could lower your overall cost. But opting for blooms that were produced in Canada will not only encourage local growers, it will also reduce your carbon footprint.

Let’s all do our part to protect the environment. Think about what you buy and what you use over the coming months. If everyone made an effort to reduce or reuse more, it would have such a great impact globally. Happy Earth Day everyone!

Here comes my blog!

I have been thinking about creating this blog and website for quite some time. So here I am!

Where does Fleurs Design come from? I have always loved gardening and design. Three years ago, I decided to take an intensive florist course and since then, I have been creating floral arrangements for weddings, special occasions and corporate events. There is nothing more satisfying than to see the joy and delight in my clients’ eyes when I show them what I have designed for them. It is such a rush!

Follow me as I write this blog. I will share with you details of events I am working on, what the trends are in the floral design world, and I will also introduce you to different flowers. I like flowers… or rather, I love them! Let me share my passion with you.

Welcome to my blog!
